Revitalization of the Historic Perimeter of the Old Town
The historic core of the town of Písek is bordered on the west by the embankment of the Otava River, and further defined by a green belt that closely follows the line of the original medieval town walls. Between 2000 and 2017, the entire perimeter of this area was gradually reconstructed in several stages.
From the forecourt of the iconic Stone Bridge at Fügner Square, visitors can now enjoy a modern riverside promenade that runs alongside the Otava River, beneath the picturesque silhouette of the Písek Castle and the Sladovna (former malt house, now a cultural center), all the way to the Town Power Plant. From there, one can pass through the so-called Katovská Gate into a revitalized section of the old moat, and continue to what is considered the most strategically important part of the entire project – the redesigned Bakaláře area. This public square now features a range of notable architectural elements that enrich the urban landscape.
The final stage of the reconstruction was completed in 2017 in the area surrounding the Lion Memorial. The new symbol of modern Písek emerged here – a contemporary, illuminated fountain that comes alive in the evening and serves as a central feature of the town’s renewed image.
The revitalization of the town’s historic border successfully merges heritage preservation with modern urban planning, offering both residents and visitors an inspiring space where history meets the present.
