Museums of Písek

You can find three main museums in the Athens of Southern Bohemia:

  • regional Prácheňské muzeum, awarded European Museum of the year 1996, placed in the former medieval royal castle
  • Memorial to Adolf Heyduk, house of famous Czech poet includes original equipment from the beginning of the 20th century (in 2026 closed for renovation)
  • museum of public lighting in the Municipal Power Station, the oldest public water power station from 1880s (due to planned renovation out of service)
1 Prácheň Museum The Prácheň Museum in Písek invites visitors to explore regional history, culture and nature in the unique setting of a medieval castle. It features attractive exhibitions, temporary shows and a varied programme of cultural events.
2 Adolf Heyduk Memorial The Adolf Heyduk Memorial in Písek is located in a Neo-Renaissance house built in 1900 for the poet Adolf Heyduk. The authentically preserved Art Nouveau interiors offer insight into his life and work. In 2026, the memorial is closed due to renovation works.
3 Municipal Power Station The Municipal Power Station in Písek is a remarkable technical monument that marked a turning point in the electrification of Bohemia. Originally serving as a mill and waterworks, the building was converted into a hydroelectric power station in 1888 with equipment designed by inventor František Křižík. Although the museum is not in operationn ow, visitors can still explore the fascinating story of the site and discover upcoming plans for its reconstruction during guided tours.
